Helsinki Philharmonic Orchestra: ‘Kullervo’ grabs
Diapason Gold
The Helsinki Philharmonic Orchestra have scored
this year’s “Diapason d’Or” for
orchestral music. The award is presented each year
by French magazine Diapason and considered one of
the most coveted prizes in the world of classical
music. The Helsinki Philharmonic Orchestra received
the critics’ appraisal for their recording
of Finnish composer Jean Sibelius’ choral symphony ‘Kullervo’,
which some have already named as either “a
candiate for the best (version) yet” or even
as the leading interpretation of this work available
on the market today. In his laudatio of the ‘Kullervo’ disc,
journalist Christian Merlin wrote that "Leif
Segerstam's forceful interpretation, (puts him) at
the top of the discography” and that Soprano
Soile Isokoski was “simply unsurpassable." For
label Ondine, this is already the second time they
have managed to take pole position at the Diapason
awards, following another Sibelius recording (“Lemminkäinen
Legends” by Mikko Franck and the Swedish Radio
Symphony Orchestra in 2000).
The state-of-the art fidelity of
Ondine's engineering is a great advantage in itself.
While quintessentially Finnish, Ondine's production
nevertheless fulfils Sibelius' intent to make this
music universal in appeal.
Warmly recommended.

Happily, the rest of the work satisfies in equal measure. ... Still, you will find an extra deftness to the string playing, particularly in "Kullervo's Youth", and some outstanding contributions from the all-important woodwinds (the crazy repeated-note oboe solo in the first movement has never gone better). "Kullervo Goes to War" also benefits from the excellent clarity of the engineering (in all formats), which gives the timpani additional presence at no sacrifice of natural balances between sections. In short, we're spoiled for choice in this work, and I for one am not complaining. [4/3/2008] --David Hurwitz

This is actually the second recording of the Third Symphony for Ondine, and it's just that much better played and certainly better recorded than its otherwise excellent Leipzig predecessor. Manhattan Trilogy is certainly ravishing, but the Symphony really deserves to enter the repertoire of orchestras the world-over. And if you love Bruckner, even a little, you must hear it. ..My overall response to this disc is very positive indeed; it gave me a vary happy hour or so of meeting old friends in new clothes, hearing many things which I didn't remember before, particularly inner parts from the orchestra and countermelodies from the piano
As to the recording, I have already referred to the excellent balance and sound-staging. It was put down with the new extra-high resolution DXD 5.0 and mastered with DSD. There are some lovely moments of rich tone in true pianissimos, and the orchestra never threatens to overwhelm the light textures of the piano, as often happens with a full modern symphony orchestra. I can hardly wait for the next issue in the series!
In summary, this will probably be one of my top SACDs of 2007;
moreover it is a wholly Finnish enterprise, and underlines yet
again the richness and vibrancy of the modern Scandinavian music
scene.

Enno Mäemets ljudbild är föredömligt
naturlig, samtidigt varm och klar, och balansen mellan pianot
och orkestern i det närmaste idealisk.

Ondine's superb multi-channel recording faithfully projects
the larger-than-life effect, with audience applause retained at both ends of
the evening and each song group.
...This Cd has much to tell us about Mattila's distinctive musicianship, her
commitment to the music of our time and her uninhibited dramatic temperament.

International Record Review, June 2007
Karita Mattila is a phenomenon - her cover photograph on this disc proclaims it, and the publicity puff on the back cover tells us it was "recorded live at sell-out concerts at the Finnish National Opera". ... There are lamentably few lieder discs available on SA-CD so far. Perhaps producers think that you don't need anything more than redbook CD for just one singer and a pianist. This superb multi-channel DXD recording puts one on an ideal seat in the audience for what was evidently a tremendous series of performances... This is a very well-filled disk, at over 76 mins - well done, Ondine...
-- SA-CD.net
...Karita Mattilan kaksi konserttia Suomen kansallisoopperassa viime vuoden lokakuussa olivat suuri yleisö- ja arvostelumenestys.... Erityinen kiitos on annettava esitysten korkealuokkaiselle äänitykselle.
-- YLE
Radio 1 / Veikko Ylikojola
Mattila is probably at her best when she is recording live. (...) This new Ondine
CD ranks at the very top of her entire discography. (...) Mattila has performed
this programme together with Martin Katz so frequently that her polished interpretation
demonstrates an accomplished maturity.

...Korhonen's playing is outstanding throughout.
The music is awash with rippling arpeggios, airy harmonics, lyrical melodies
and sometimes violent strumming;
these Korhonen relates to their more rational syntactic underpinnings with
the skill of an interior designer who happens to be possessed of a peculiar
genius.
...recorded sound is up to Ondine's usual high standard.

Finnish soprano Soile Isokoski has never made a more beautiful recording
than this... She has all of the interpretive intelligence of her compatriot
Karita Mattila, but her voice catches the microphones better, sounding richer
and smoother throughout its range. The engineering in both stereo and SACD
multi-channel formats is uniformly outstanding, and the booklet includes
complete texts and translations. A marvelous release in every respect.
--David Hurwitz
-- Tobias Pfleger
...And the recording, excellent in CD stereo, is utterly
stunning in multichannel SACD: airy, large-scale, immediate and detailed
with diamond clarity. ...Between performance and recording this would be
my prime recommendation for Luonnotar, but this whole disc's a Sibelian essential.

Pekka Kuusisto made a terrific recording of that work for Ondine, and it's
great to see him back in the remaining music for violin and orchestra...
... The engineering, whether in stereo or multichannel formats, is just as
splendid as the performances. The music may not be Sibelius' most popular,
but it's great stuff, and these players don't let you forget that fact for
as much as a second. Terrific! [7/18/2006]
